P and T contacted me from Denmark a few months ago looking for an Iceland Wedding Photographer for their special day. They had already planned where and how their ceremony would be: they were to be married just the two of them in the charming little church of Vík y Myrdal in a private, religious ceremony. It was not the first time in Iceland for P and T so they already had a very clear idea of the places they wanted to visit and the day they would say “I do”. They chose the one and only summer solstice day. Iceland's longest day of the year and its midnight sun are both famously known and many people spend that day doing outdoor activities with their loved ones.
P and T chose this date for its special significance of the midnight sun, but also for the fields of Lupines that spread throughout the country during the month of June. It really is a spectacular phenomenon, driving down the Ring Road surrounded by waterfalls and endless fields of purple flowers everywhere. It’s moments like this that make me very grateful to be an Iceland wedding photographer, capturing the most epic love stories in this dramatic piece of nature.
The lupine is probably the most famous flower in all of Iceland, however, it is not native to the island. The lupine is a very resistant plant, originating from Alaska, and was introduced on purpose in 1945 to prevent the erosion of the delicate volcanic soil in certain parts of the country. What the Icelanders did not expect when they introduced it for this purpose, was that it spread so quickly, invading fields, mountains, and everything in its path. For many it is like a gift when spring arrives, for others, it is an invasive plant that is destroying fertile soil and part of the pasture for Icelandic horses and sheep.
But let's save the history lesson for another day. Let's continue with the love story of P and T who decided to exchange vows in secret, embracing the magic of being alone in one of the world's most stunning places on one of the most special days of the year.
Following their Iceland wedding ceremony in Vík, we embarked on a journey to the waterfalls. The first stop was Skógafoss, surrounded by Lupine fields that painted a spectacular purple backdrop. While the site tends to draw crowds, we managed to find a spot that was closer to the waterfall before swiftly moving on to Kvernufoss—a hidden gem that offered more intimacy and fewer visitors. As we ventured into the Kverna river canyon, we explored the entire area, even venturing behind the waterfall itself! Each visit to this extraordinary place leaves me in awe; it truly is a one-of-a-kind experience. And so, we concluded their precious Icelandic wedding day, basking in the magical glow of the midnight sun.
Capturing the love and magic of P and T's wedding day under the midnight sun was an honor. As an Iceland wedding and elopement photographer, I am privileged each and every time I get to document these extraordinary moments. If you're considering an adventure elopement or a wedding in Iceland, reach out to me. Let's tell your story in the most epic way!
